Number one, make sure you’ve got all the equipment. Do you need to prep your shoe? So this could be brushes cloths to make sure that you choose a nice and shiny and clean because you don’t want to really get rid of any stuff in post-production dust and so on some scissors scissors a great to just snip off any loose threads that might be there you want to have something to also stuff.
The shoes to make sure that they keep their shape. So this could be some tissue sort of plastic material like this that we can curve and push the tongue out with with this particular shoe. I want to make sure that I’ve got some stuffing inside not too much. I don’t want to overfill it. But essentially I just want to make sure that this is looking nice and round and not flat and off it as it may have squashed in the Box even things like Chopsticks can help Bend out a shoe that might be bowing slightly. So it lifted the Aunt we can use something inside as long as you can hide it or post produce it might get rid of it in Photoshop you can use that to straighten the shoe out. Some canned air is really great to also give the shoe a last little clean before you shoot tip. Number two is lighting what we want to do is we want to have a nice overall even life the shoe with a few little extras to add a bit more interest to the shoe. So what I’m looking for
The basic overall light setup here. I want to make sure that I’ve got light coming in from both sides just to make it quite even but I really want to make sure that I keep it in this nice contact Shadow here and then I want to look out for things like the metal work making sure that that looks really lovely. So I might need to add some white card or some white reflector in so I’m just going to add that front filled just to clean up that Chrome area here. And that’s essentially just on this machine just closing the door that gives me a white reflector in there. And that’s really cleaned up that are in fact is probably a little bit too bright right now. So what I’ll do is I’ll just take my exposure down a little bit. I do want to light up my background as well. But I want to be careful not to lose this Edge and make it all Milky by over lighting it. So I’m just going to add a little bit of light onto the background happy with that now just going to take that shot. Lon
There we have it a nice contact Shadow here. The lighting looks nice and even and I’m picking out these details here and I’ve cleaned up my Chrome and we don’t have too much bleed here on the back of the shoe. Tip number three would be your camera and lens settings what sort of settings would we need to shoot Footwear in this way will make sure that your lens is not going to distort your product. Make sure that you’re on a decent f-stop to get everything in Focus that you want in Focus. So choose an f-stop that will give you the depth of field that you’re after so making sure that everything is in Focus that you want to focus. So whether it’s the front shoe and then the battery coming out of focus. Two
Both shoes being in Focus make sure that your f-stop is at the right setting for you to achieve that depth of field choose a lens of about 50 millimeters or above so that you don’t distort the look of the shoe. You really want to make sure that you’re not changing the shape of the shoe by the lens that you’ve chosen. So wide angle lenses close up tend to distort the product make sure that you’re not distorting the look of your Footwear by choosing the wrong lens. By putting the camera on a tripod we can choose any shutter speed that we like this will allow us to then reduce the iso so we don’t get noisy picture. We can have a nice clean image as good Shoppers overall choosing the right f-stop and as you’re on a tripod the shutter speed won’t matter. Tip number four Shooting shoes is All About Angles. What you want to do is have effective angles that show off all the details and all the sides of the shoes that you want to see. So we’re going to start here with this first angle, which is a single shoe and it’s just showing the
Profile of the shoe Because the angles that you choose a really up to you, but there are some key angles that tend to work well for Footwear the 3/4 is our second angle and they’ve added in the other shoe here.
Third angle is the sort of back 3/4 and it’s the detail shot.
What I want to do is make sure that I focus on the front shoe and I’ve made sure that the steelwork the Chrome work and the strap and looking really nice and neat for this shot.
Angle is just at the pair from Tom.
So choosing a few key angles can really help your Footwear photography. Tip number five will be choose the right image type for what you want to do. So if it’s going straight to a website, maybe you could just have a JPEG if you want to do some further editing further post-production choose a raw file this way you’ll be able to edit your image and then output it as a JPEG or Tiff for later use. So with these five tips. Hopefully you can get started on producing some really lovely Footwear shots.
